Man Can’t Quit on Cheating, Sent to Prison for 17 Years

The world of gambling and casinos has always been very interesting, to say the least, for both gamblers and non-gamblers. And one of the most common questions often asked is, is it possible to cheat?

Probably you’ve seen the first installment of Hangover when the gang had to recoup the money they were accused of stealing by playing blackjack. Of course, since they had to increase their chances of winning, they resorted to count counting. They eventually won and walked out of the casino unscathed.

In reality, it’s definitely possible to cheat, whether you’re playing slots or any of the card or table games. The easiest will be to collude with the dealer or anybody from the casino with the promise of giving them their share of the loot. If you are determined enough, you can try the so-called tricks of the trade, including card counting.

Don’t even think, however, that you can get away that fast. For casinos all around the globe, cheating is a grievous crime, and you will be asked to pay one way or the other.

Take, for example, the New Jersey man named Derek Bethea. At 57 years old, he’s been charged and convicted with cheating in casinos and is sentenced to spend 17 years of his life in prison. By the time he’s out, he may not fully enjoy his senior years. He was convicted last May 2014 for cheating and swindling, but the actual sentence had been carried out on June 12, 2014.

It began almost a year ago when he went on a casino gambling binge in New Jersey. In the United States, New Jersey and Nevada are two of the states that have a very active casino industry. Within two weeks, he visited three casinos in Atlantic City playing in their craps table.

He started with Borgata Hotel and Casino where he placed the bet worth $1,100 on craps. It may definitely be a hefty amount for a bet, but he’s sure is confident to win because his betting AFTER the dice had already rolled out. In this first instance, he was immediately discovered, was detained, and was given summons.

The overconfident guy, nevertheless, believed his luck hadn’t run out yet. Thus, he placed a bet of $505 in Resorts Hotel and Casino two weeks after. Again, it was a late bet. He spent $240 too in another casino, Revel, and used the same playing method.

In all instances, though, he never got the chance to recover his bets as the casinos would not honor his winnings but were already pressing charges against him.

Needless to say, his incarceration may no longer be that surprising for him as it turns out he’s been previously convicted for the same crime many years ago and was locked up for many years because of that.

With casinos, you can definitely cheat—but don’t ever think casinos are not setting their eyes on you. If they catch you, you can surely suffer the same fate.
