What Live Baccarat is All About?

Live baccarat is an easy game to play with a house edge that is quite low makes Baccarat a favorite casino game. Those who are interested in games of skill and improving their skill with time will probably find Baccarat boring over time. Those who think betting on luck or who feel lucky in general may find Baccarat to be one of their favorite games!

Baccarat that follows the traditional rules is frequently referred to as “Big” Baccarat. This type of game is frequently roped off for the high rollers willing to place minimum bets as high as $1000! Many people assume Baccarat must be an elite game with such high minimum bets, however this just isn’t the case. Baccarat is a game that may be played by all even if casinos try and make it more elite. For those of more modest means there is “mini baccarat” and this is usually found on the casino floor amongst the other games reserved for the “commoners.” Regardless of where the game is played or how much the minimum bet, the game and its rules are the same. There are some differences in how the game is played, but not the rules that govern it. In regular baccarat, the players must deal the cards. However, in “mini baccarat” a dealer is on hand to deal the cards. No matter where baccarat is played or how much is bet, the game is all about luck and there is no amount of practicing that will increase your odds.

History of Baccarat

A casino card game, baccarat is believed to have originated in Italy and then introduced to the French when Charles VIII ruled France. That would have been during 1483-1498. The game of baccarat is actually quite similar to the games of Basset and Faro. The game of baccarat has three accepted versions. These include North American baccarat, punto banco, railway baccarat, chemin de fer, and baccarat banque. Punto Banco, the North American version, is simply a game of chance and there is absolutely no strategy or skill whatsoever. The cards each player receives determine what moves the player makes. Players can make choices in both baccarat chemin de fer and baccarat banque. Because of this, skill is important in both of these versions of baccarat.

There are only three possible results in baccarat. They include “tie”, “player”, and “banker.” It is important for players to realize that none of these results refers to anything in particular, not the house or the actual player; they are just simply options that the player can bet on.

Baccarat Card Values

It is important for new players to understand how baccarat is played. The hand valuation or values of the baccarat cards is one of the most important things to understand. Cards worth face value are 2-9 while 10s and face cards have 0 value. This means that 10s, Js, Qs, and Ks have a zero value. Aces have a value of one point.

A score is calculated quite easily and can be done so by taking the sum of all the cards and ignoring the ten digit once the cards have been summed. An example of this would be a hand with a 2 and a 3, which would be worth a total of 5 when summed.

is a total of 5

A hand of 5 and 7 would be 12 when summed and when the ten digit is dropped the 12 becomes a 2.

is a total of 2
(5+7=12, but 10 is dropped leaving 2)

The reason this digit is dropped is that the total is higher than 10. A hand that is a 4 and a 6 would be worth 10 with the ten digit dropped would equal 0, which is the worst hand.

This is the worst hand in baccarat:

is a total of 0
(6+4=10, but 10 is dropped leaving 0)

It is interesting that the game would be named after the worst hand in the game. The highest hand in Baccarat would be a 9, so a 5 and a 4 or an A and an 8 or a 10 and a 9.

This is the best hand in baccarat:

is a total of 9
5+4=9, best hand in baccarat)

Types of Baccarat Bets

There are only three bets whether you are playing Big or Mini Baccarat.  They are banker, player and tie. The following table, based on a game with six decks, demonstrates what each bet would have as a payoff as well as the likelihood of winning in addition to the house edge.

baccarat probability and edge chart

The set of rules that govern Baccarat are the same no matter where you play the game. Depending on how many decks of cards are used the edge may differ somewhat. In Big Baccarat it is most common to use eight decks of cards. However, in Mini Baccarat it is more common to use six decks of cards. When playing in an Internet casino look out because sometimes only one deck is used and this may vary significantly.
