Canada, the world's second largest country by total area after Russia, is located in the northern part of North America and borders the United States of America. Canada, which has the Atlantic Ocean on its east coast and the Pacific Ocean on its west coast, covers an area of 3.8 million square miles (almost 10 million sq. km.) and has a population of around 34 million people.

Canada's geography is extremely diverse, with forests, the Rocky Mountains, vast areas of prairie and farmland, and industrial areas.

Canada has two official languages: Canadian English and Canadian French, which is spoken in Quebec. Around 59% of the population are native English speakers, while around 22% of the report French as their native language. Several languages are spoken in Canada, with one in six inhabitants having a native language that is neither English nor French.

Canada, a member of the G8 group of leading industrialized countries, has a highly diversified economy that is the world's 19th richest by GDP. Its economy relies heavily on its natural resources and on foreign trade. Over time, Canada has become a highly industrialized and advanced nation, evolving from what was a rural economy, through the development of its mining, manufacturing and service sectors. The main exports of Canada include oil, gas, grains, lumber, motor vehicles, car components, accessories and engines, minerals, plastics, telecoms equipment and aluminum.

Although much Canadian food is similar to that of its neighbor the USA, due to the battles between England and France over who would colonize the territory (enduring from the late 1400s until the late 1800s), much of the country's cuisine and traditions still contain a hint of English and French influence. Around Quebec, the food bears a French influence, while other areas bear the influence of settlers and explorers. The Northwest is influenced by Inuit culture and the area around British Columbia is influenced by Asian cuisine.
Poutine (French fries and cheese curds, covered with brown gravy) and butter tarts (a flaky pastry tart filled with a filling of butter, eggs, sugar and syrup) are often considered national foods.
Other typical foods of Canada are Canadian bacon with maple glaze, barbecued meats and corn dishes, and sweet pancakes with maple syrup, berries or cream.

Culturally, Canada is very diverse, with influences from the French and English, its American neighbors, its indigenous peoples and immigrants. Art before the 19th century was mainly influenced by European movements, before Canadian artists started to come into their own, taking inspiration from Aboriginal art (among other things) and developing their own styles. Inuit art and sculpture in particular have flourished in recent times. Canadian literature is divided into that written in English and that written in French. Prominent writers include Michael Ondaatje ("The English Patient") and Margaret Atwood. Canadian music is a reflection of the country's cultural diversity, with its music influenced over the years by the French, British and Aboriginals peoples, as well as by (more recently) the USA and immigrant communities.

Sports play a major role in Canadian society, with ice hockey, Canadian football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, curling and baseball being the dominant ones.
