If you love roulette then you probably are interested in learning the rules and strategies so you can maximize your ability to win. Roulette is incredibly popular and this is partly because learning how to play is so easy. Some people are wary of roulette because the game intimidates them, however when you investigate what the game is all about you will quickly see that roulette is quite easy and incredibly fun to play. The following guide will help you learn more about roulette and become a better player. Take a few moments to read the tips and then you will be ready to give your first game of roulette a go.
Typically, as many as 8 players may play at one time and everyone plays against the house. The dealer represents the house and he/she will spin the wheel and handle all bets and winnings. The game of roulette is pretty standard worldwide, however if you play in Europe you are more likely to play roulette with a 37 slot wheel whereas in the United States a 38 slot wheel is more common. Keep this in mind when you are playing.

Getting started is really easy. All that is necessary is to buy some chips. Each player should have different colored chips so it makes betting easier and better organized. Betting and winning in roulette is very similar to other casino games. When you bet, you bet with colored chips. When you win, you receive cash chips and when you lose you lose your chips altogether.
Each player may place his/her bet on whatever number they choose. Once every player has placed his/her bet then the dealer will spin the wheel and launch the ball. While the ball is still in play, the dealer will say "no more bets" and at this point no more bets will be accepted nor may they be changed. Once the ball drops into one of the slots, the winners and losers are known.
Those that win the game of roulette in the casino are those players that bet on the number where the ball landed. Once the dealer places the dolly on the winning number, then the bets are cleared and the winners are paid. Once the winners have been paid then the process begins again. In some cases, there are no winners. When this happens, the house simply rakes in the bets and starts the process over again.
The great thing about roulette is that anyone can play. This is not a game of skill or a game that you can anticipate what number will win. It is a game of luck and your bets should be made accordingly. Keep in mind, too, that just because a certain number or color one previously does not mean that it won't win the next time. There is no memory or reset on the roulette wheel, so every time the wheel is spun any number or color may win!
To the right is a common roulette wheel and there are only two variations. You will find in Europe that the wheel has only one zero in most cases while in the United States many casinos play a wheel with 0 and 00.
The house edge is lower when you play the European way so that is always recommended. When playing an American roulette wheel the house has an edge of 5.26% while the European wheel has only a 2.7% house advantage. Generally, roulette is divided into American roulette and French roulette, although European roulette is frequently substituted as the name of the latter. French roulette is slower and has better odds.
European Roulette
Check out the picture below of the European Live Roulette table and wheel. Notice its layout because it is somewhat different than the American layout. See where the zero (in green) is located on the wheel as well as how the numbers on the board are situated in the middle.

American Roulette
This is the American Live Roulette layout with double zeros and a single zero. You can see on the board how they are positioned beside each other yet on the wheel they are directly across from one another.

The house edge for roulette is calculated by the following formula for each bet.
House Edge for Bet= [Payout (# Numbered Bet) + # Numbered Bet] / Total Possibilities
Let's say the we are going to calculate the house edge for a 2 numbered bet. This could be either between any two numbers or between the double zeros in an American Roulette game.
Payout for a 2 Numbered bet is 17:1
The total possibilities of this two numbered bet in American Roulette is 38 (36 numbers plus 2 zeros) or 37 in European Roulette (36 numbers plus 1 zero). In this example let's say we are playing European Roulette.
The House Edge is calculated the following:
House Edge = [1-[17(2)+2]/37]100 = [1-[34+2]/37]100= [1-36/38]100=2.7%
You'll notice that in Both European Roulette and American Roulette the house edge is the same for all bets EXCEPT for the 5 numbered bet which has a higher House Edge. That's why you should never place a bet on the five numbered option. In the above graph you can see that the five numbered bet is highlighted in red to help demonstrate the odds.
