Basic Poker Strategy
A single deck of 52 cards is all that is necessary to play poker. Remove the jokers and you are ready to play. Before the cards are dealt each player places their ante bet in the table. This is the bet to get the game going. Then, the cards are dealt. Bets are placed by each player in the center of the poker table.
Next, five cards are dealt to each player face down. The players are able to look at their cards and then betting begins. The first player to the left of the dealer places the bet.

Players may choose to bet or fold. Folding is simply getting out of the game without having to bet anymore. Most of the time players decide to fold when they have a really bad hand or don’t believe that they can make a better hand. When you fold, you give the dealer your cards facedown so that the other players won’t see what you were holding. Any bets you have made before you fold are not returned.
In some poker games, players may “check.” This simply means that they are able to stay in the game without making a bet for that round. Usually, checking is allowed after the first round of betting when the cards have first been dealt. Not all poker games allow checking, though. Those who check will be required to bet on the next betting round if they want to stay in the game.
The player who makes the first bet determines the amount of the bet all other players are required to bet in order to stay in the game. If the first bet is really high it might signal to other players that you have a strong hand and players may fold. It is a good idea to build the pot up with the first couple rounds without giving any hints that you have a good hand. Each subsequent player bets the initial bet and may raise. In order to remain in the game it is important to bet at least the amount the player before you bet. Betting continues until only one player is left in the game or else two players are battling and end up in a showdown to see who wins the pot. When only one player is left the pot is his. He does not have to reveal his hand to the other players. When a showdown occurs the highest ranking hand wins. If there is a tie then the pot is shared.
This is the basic game of poker. However there are significant variations with many differences to create a more exciting and challenging game.
