Seven-card Stud Poker
The seven-card stud poker is one of the most common versions of stud poker. The mechanics is almost the same as the more recent Texas Hold’em since the former uses faced-down cards. Nevertheless, there are differences—a lot of them. First, there are not only 2 but 7 cards to play with. There are no more communal cards that you can use to come up with highest hands. Of the seven cards, four of them are actually revealed, while the rest are faced down. Like Texas Hold’em, though, the one who has the best five-card hand wins.

How the Game Is Played
1. The players should put up an ante. An ante is a stake that is put up by the players before the game actually begins. This doesn’t form part of the actual pot, but is only used to commence the seven-stud poker game. In casinos, they are usually in the form of game, and you can use it to signify a “tax” for playing the game. This is in contrast too with Texas Hold’em, wherein to start the game, two players should make blind bets.
2. The dealer gives three cards to each player. Starting from the left, the dealer will give three cards to every player. Two of them should be pocket or hold cards, which means they should be faced down. The other one should be facing up. At this time, players can already start deducing. Normally, the players who have good starting hands (such as coming up with a pair) can bet small.
3. A round of betting begins. The betting round will begin after three cards have been given. The player holding the lowest value of a faced-up card (usually determined by the suit with the spade as the highest and the club the lowest) will be the one to make the small bet, which is commonly known as bring in. Then the player next to him will follow, so on and so forth. Along the way, players can practice a raise, call, or fold. The raise is usually betting more than what is already the minimum bet given. For example, if the minimum is $2, his bet should be a minimum of $4. To call is to make the previous minimum bet. To fold is to not make any bet at all and lose the opportunity to win the round. The process goes on until before the last card, which is faced down, is given to every player.
4. Players show their remaining cards. Players will then have to reveal the values of the faced-down cards. At this point, it will become a lot clearer who among them have actually won the game.
Strategies in Playing the Game
1. When you have better hands, do the fast play. In a fast play, the player either makes a bet or raises it, which means the other players have to make a call or fold. This technique is done to ensure that there will be as many players as possible that will fold and be eliminated from the game. 2. Keep watch of the revealed cards. Though there are around 52 cards that you need to watch out, it still wise to at least take a good look at them and remember them. Evaluating other people’s hands will let you know of your chances. When you haven’t taken a good look of the folded ones, you may as well fold unless you have very strong hands.
