Omaha Poker
When you get to play Omaha poker, you may think that you’re actually dealing with Texas Hold’em Poker. This is quite understandable. Almost all the steps are very similar with the latter; however, there are some variations, and they are highly notable. Here are some of them:
1. The number of faced-down cards. The first initial difference will be the number of faced-down cards that will be given to every player. With Texas Hold’em, every one is given two. But when it comes to Omaha poker, each player will be given four faced-down ones. The number of community cards, however, doesn’t change. There are still five of them.
2. Variations of the games. There are actually two known types of Omaha poker. You can play the Omaha High and the Omaha Hi-Lo. Now, the rules of the game for both are the same. They differ on how the pot will be treated. With the former, the pot will be given to the one who has the best hand only. With the latter, the ones with worst and best hands shall receive the pot. As to how it will be distributed will depend on the other discussed rules.
Compared to Omaha poker, the player who wins in Texas Hold’em shall have the prize on his own, unless he wants to share it with the other players.
3. Determination of Winning Hands. When it comes to Texas Hold’em poker, the winning hand is the one that has the highest valuation, which can be determined by combining his two faced-down cards and any of the three community cards. This is slightly different from Omaha. Although a player will be given four cards to play, he only has to use two of them, which he then needs to combine with any 3 of the community cards. There is no other way to determine the value of his hands.
Strategies to Win the Game
If you have talked to some of the best players in Omaha poker, they would probably tell you to master the Texas Hold’em first. After all, the rules of the games are almost the same, and between the two, the latter is far less complicated.
Nevertheless, perhaps you can take note of the following strategies or techniques for you to increase your chances of winning:
1. Start with an ace-ace card. A player who gets to play a pair of aces is always on the right track, though you should not be complacent, as there are actually other stronger combinations available. You may want to aspire for a AsAdKsKd combination, though, since you have the best pairs, and if you get a full house, you know that it’s the highest one, and nothing can possibly beat that.

2. Determine the unplayable hands. If there are winning hands, there are also losing hands. A typical example will be 4c4h3d3s. Aside from the fact that they are very low, they are also weak straights. You may want to say no with this kind of hand rather than lose the game.

3. Read the value of your hands properly. Though the basic rules of the games may never be changed, there are still some areas that remain to be gray, and only the management will have the sole power to settle it. Normally, the rule known as Card Speak will matter. This is usually applied whenever a player deliberately or accidentally declares the wrong value of his hand. His words, nevertheless, won’t matter, as the dealer should read the actual value of the hand. However, there’s a huge tendency that his hand will be treated as fouled. You simply want to avoid that.
