Omaha poker may be a variation of Texas Hold’em, but Omaha has its own two known versions too. We have the Omaha High and the Omaha Hi-low. If you can master the latter, then there’s a huge possibility that you can also effectively learn how to play the former. This is because the Omaha Hi-low is far complicated than Omaha High. There is a possibility that there will be two or even more players who are going to win or share the pot, depending on the current cards that they have.
Rules of the Game
How to play Omaha Hi-low is very similar to how to play Omaha High and even Texas Hold’em. There is, of course, a difference. With Omaha High-low, the bet shall be divided between the best hand and the worst hand. When translated, the former is actually the real winner of the game, and the latter is the ultimate loser, and yet he can have his own stake at the pot.
How to Determine the Hands
The best hands are usually the Royal Flush and the Straight Flush. The former contains the highest denomination all belonging to the same suit, while the latter is five consecutive cards that belong to the same suit.

Straight Flush
Now, with Omaha Hi-low, when you have these types of cards, you’re in for a sure win. However, you can also get to share the pot with the one holding the worst hand. To qualify, though, a player must have cards that are eight or below. Otherwise, he will never have any chance of winning the bet. You can use below as an example:

How Many Cards Are Played
Here’s another difference between Omaha Hi-low and Texas Hold’em. With the latter, the player has five cards to play. Two are given to him, which will then be paired to any of the 3 communal cards. With Omaha Hi-low, though, the player will have four cards, but only two of them will be used to combine with any of the 3 communal cards. This is where you are going to apply your strategy, so you can come up with either the best or the worst hand.
How the Bet Is Split
Here in the game, it doesn’t really come that there will always be a worst hand. This means that there is no player who has 8-and-below denominations. So the entire pot will only go to the winner. However, if there is, the pot will be divided 50-50. There’s also the tendency that there will be two or more players who will have the worst possible hands. Half of the pot, which is intended for the worst hand, will then be divided half again (or the pot will be quartered). Considering that there are a lot of players who have worst hands (8 and below), there’s a possibility that the qualified worst-hand players will not take home anything.
Common Tips to Win the Game
There are different techniques on how you can play and eventually win an Omaha Hi-low game. But for starters, you can apply the following:
1. Determine how high or how low the card is. There are just two possible scenarios that you have to work hard on. You should have either the best or the worst hand. Thus, before anything else, know the possible combinations that will get you the highest hand and the worst hand.
2. Go for the aces. The aces are the most in-demand denomination in Omaha Hi-low, and here’s why. When combined with the highest ones, it ranks the first when it comes to highest values. When it doesn’t, it becomes the lowest. When you have two aces, for example, there’s a huge possibility that you can go for Four of a Kind, which is actually one of the best possible hands you can have. You can also let it fall to a Pair, with the other 3 remaining cards below 8, and you can just have the worst hand.
