Perhaps one of the oldest types of stud poker is the five-card stud poker. In fact, during the American Civil War, the game is already played among men. However, as more and more types of poker are introduced through the years, there seems to be a decline on the interest of five-stud poker. Seven-card stud poker is even played more than the latter. The game is not also included in the World Series Poker. Nevertheless, there are some countries that still love to play five-stud poker, such as Finland, where it’s better known as soko. There are also plenty of online poker rooms that include the five-stud poker.
How to Play the Game
Five-stud poker can be considered as the predecessor of the more complicated seven-stud poker, and it’s actually a non-positional game. This means that there are no community cards (unless, of course, the cards will never be enough for all players and that the remaining card shall be considered as a community card that can be used to form a hand by any player). There are also five cards that are given to each player, but only four of them are revealed.

Before the start of the game, the players need to make an ante. This will not basically form part of the pot, but they can very well start the game. The player to the left of the dealer shall start; then the rest will follow. When everyone has already made their ante, the dealer will then shuffle the deck of cards and remove the burn card (the topmost card). Every player will then be handed two cards, of which one is faced down while the other is revealed.
A new round of betting will commence. Normally, if there is a bring-in amount, the one with the lowest value of card shall start. If there isn’t, the one with the highest value of faced-up card will begin the betting. If both players have the same value of cards, the suit will determine who goes first. With stud poker, the spade is given more value than diamonds, hearts, and clubs. When everyone has already made their bets, the third street begins, with the burn card removed and one card being passed among the other players. This one is faced-up too. Now, the third street is already considered a crucial stage, since there’s a huge chance that you can already have a pair, and by this time, you have bigger stake at the pot.
After the third street, betting occurs again. This goes on until the showdown, where the best five-card hand wins the game.
Strategies in Winning the Game
You may think that five-card stud poker is a lot easier to win than seven-card stud poker, since only one card is left faced down. However, if you are not too careful, you can just lose a game even if you have good hands. A five-card stud poker is all about pairs and high cards. Flushes and straights are the less of your priorities unless you already have one during your third street, or you can make one when you’re on your fourth street. Normally, if you cannot come up with a pair even on the third street or a high card, you may start thinking of folding, unless, of course, there is no other top card found in the table. You also have to remember that values 9 and below are considered weak cards, while an ace can either be the highest (if paired) or lowest (if alone).

You also need to pay attention to the folded cards, so you will have a better idea which cards are live or are currently being played by your opponents. Moreover, when you have the advantage or a good hand, you may want to settle for a fast play to force players to call, raise, or fold cards, eliminating as many of them as possible.
