Poker can be played with many variations. In fact, poker is simply known as any card game that is played with five card hands and the subsequent ranking of those cards. The object in poker is to have the best ranking hand and to win the money pot. This means your five card hand must outrank all of the other players’ hands. A dealer represents the casino and usually takes a 10% cut to deal the cards and handle the bets.
How Poker Hands Rank
The point in poker is to have the highest ranking hand possible. You can see that the more difficult a hand is to achieve the higher it ranks. The rankings are not the deciding factor alone, however, in what hand trumps another in the game of poker. Also important is the individual ranking of the cards. The highest value in a deck of cards is an Ace and the lowest value is a two. As a result, a pair of aces trumps everything and a pair of anything trumps a pair of twos. Individual card values are as follows in descending order: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2.
The actual suits of the cards don’t affect the way the cards rank. For example, should two players have the same hand, say a royal flush, but one has hearts and the other has spades, then the two hands will tie. This is uncommon, but it happens!
The royal flush is the highest ranking hand with A, K, Q, J, 10 all of the same suit. This hand is only possible four different ways with diamonds, hearts, spades, or clubs.
A straight flush is five cards in numerical order of the same suit. An example would be 9, 8, 7, 6, and 5 of spades.
Four of a kind is four cards with the same value, say four kings or four fives, and a fifth card of any other value.
A full house is a hand with three of a kind and two of a kind. When two players have a full house the deciding factor is the player with the highest numerical three of a kind. In the situation where one player has 5, 5, 5 and 2, 2 and another player has 4, 4, 4, and K, K the hand with the threes wins because the threes are higher than the twos.
A flush is five cards of the same suit, regardless of numerical order.
A straight is five cards in consecutive numerical order regardless of suit. The highest straight is A, K, Q, J, 10. A straight flush is five cards in numeral consecutive order of the same suit.
Three of a kind is three cards of the same value with two cards of different values. An example would be A, A, A and J, 2.
Two pairs are two sets of two cards with the same value and any other card to round out the five card hand. One famous hand of two pairs is called the Dead Man’s hand and this is Aces over Eights, or two aces and two eights with any fifth card.
One pair is two cards with the same value and any three other cards. If more than one player has a pair the highest pair wins. If the pair is the same numerical value then the next highest card determines the winner. Should the cards be the same then there is a tie.
hould none of the players have any of the hands mentioned above the winner will be the player with the single highest card. In most cases this would be an Ace, which would beat a hand with a King or Queen and so on and so forth.
