Craps Principles

The craps principle base on probability theory explores the probability of certain events occurring under repeated trials. To most people, these equations are boring, confusing, and have no bearing whatsoever on their Craps playing or betting. However, some people find the mathematics behind gambling fascinating and they use it to the full extent possible to help them win.

Types of Craps Bets (Craps Wagers)

As in most gambling games, craps has quite a few different options when it comes to types of wagers. It is important to know what the wagers are and how to bet on them so you play the game properly without asking too many questions or slowing down the game. If you are somewhat knowledgeable before sitting down at the craps table then this will be appreciated by all.

Line Bets

Take a look at the image above. This is the standard craps board. If the shooter wants to shoot then he is required to make either a pass line bet or a don’t pass bet. The line bets rely on points.

Pass Line Bet

The pass line bet, sometimes referred to as the win line, is the basic bet in craps. If the come out roll is either a 7 or an 11 then the pass line bet wins immediately. Should the come out roll be 2, 3, or 12, then the bet “craps out” and loses. “Crapping out” is a common term  in craps and one you will hear regularly. When the roll has any other numbers, or value, then a point is established; Should that same point be rolled a second time before a 7 is rolled then the bet will win. Then, when the point is established, if the 7 rolls before the point is rolled again the n the bet will lose or “seven out” as it is frequently referred to.

Don't Pass Line Bet

The don’t pass line bet is simply the opposed of the pass line bet. This means that if the roll is 7 or 11 on the come out roll then it loses. However, if the come out roll is either 2 or 3 it wins. Depending on the casino, a 12 is a draw. The good thing is that if a 12 is rolled then the player can’t lose.

The reason there is a draw on 12 is to make sure there is a house edge no matter what players are betting on. You will see the word “Bar” on the Craps table and this just means “Standoff.”

The don’t pass will lose if a point has been established and then the point is rolled again. The don’t pass will win if the 7 is rolled before the point may be re-rollled. This is how the don’t pass is completely opposite of pass because what wins for one loses for the other and vice versa.

Pass Odds

If a point is set on the come out roll, meaning either a 4,5,6,8, or 9 is thrown then many casinos will allow the pass line bettors to take odds. What this means is the bettor can place his bet, from one to five times the pass line bet, behind the pass line. If the point is rolled again before the 7 is rolled, meaning the point is made, then the additional bet will win. It will pay the odds of 2 to 1 if the point was made on a 4 or 10, 3 to 2 if the point was made on a 5 or 9 and 6 to 5 if the point was made on 6 or 8.

There are some casinos where the odds on the bet depends on the point that is made. This is called "3-4-5X Odds" and it helps to make calculating the winnings a little easier. In this situation, when a maximum odds bet is made on a 3-4-5X table then it will be paid at six times the pass line every time no matter what the point was.

Contrasting with the even money pass line bet, odds bets are paid as true odds and playing the pass odds when a minimum pass line bet has been wagered will reduce the house advantage. As a craps player it is important to know that the louses possible house edge in the casino is to place a maximum odds bet on a minimum pass line.

Don’t Pass Odds

Players can still lay odds when they play don’t pass simply by placing their chips behind the don’t pass line. The odds pay true odds of 1 to 2 if a 7 is rolled before the point of 4 or 10. If the point is 9 the odds pay 2 to 3 and if 6 or 8 is the point the odds pay 5 to 6.
