Betting Variants

When it comes to betting variants it depends totally on the table and the casino. Some casinos will have tables that have variants or use different variants or omit them altogether.

  • Instead of a natural, 11 is used as a point number. The “Yo” center bets are still paid when an 11 is rolled but the pass line will not be an automatic win. Similarly, the don’t pass line bet will not lose automatically if on the come out roll an 11 is rolled. On pass/come odds bets the point pays 3 to 1 and on don’t pass/come odds it pays 1:3. Line bets are paid even money. The odds of a naturals is reduced somewhat by this as well as the odds of making the point. As a result, the house edge on the pass line is increased somewhat.
  • On the field, 11 pays 2 to 1. The house edge on the field is lowered more because of this and it is because the variant is used normally when 12 pays 3 to 1.
  • The bets of Big 6 and Big 8 are not available. These are the equivalent of buying 6 or 8 points because the payout is better with the same real odds. Because of this, rarely will you see the Big 6 and Big 8 used and most casinos simply take them off the table.

Optimal betting

Since there is a negative expected value and all bets have a house advantage, the best strategy in Craps would to be the house. Since that is not going to work the best way to reduce your losses on an hourly basis is to only place the bets that have the smallest house advantage. That’s why you should look over the graph that explains the odds of winning and the house advantage to know what bets give the player the best odds of winning.

The best bets are at casinos that only charge commissions on wins that include come/don’t line, pass/don’t line, buy 4, buy 10, place 6, and place 8. These bets have the lowest house edge in craps and are the smartest bets to make. Experienced craps players usually play these wagers the majority of the time unless a situation arises to make another bet worthwhile.

To show how these bets mentioned above are the safest bets to make in Craps you should understand how much more you will lose betting on others. For example, on average, with all the other bets in craps you will find the difference in house edge will allow you to lose money three to 12 times faster than you otherwise would if you stuck with the other bets. That is a big difference and worth paying attention to.

To determine the house advantage per roll you can use an alternative metric that will help you understand loss per hour. In general, with a full craps table, there are 102 rolls her hour.

Of course, the actual number of rolls per hour will differ slightly, but this is a good working number considering a full table. With this reference only “29.6% of total rolls are come out rolls, on average,” so with this alternative metric the need for extra rolls is factored in to resolve the pass line bet. The resulting number will then allow the calculation of rate of loss per hour as well as the 4 day and 5 hour per day gambling trip.

Check out the statistics below for various bets and you can see over a period of per hour and per trip what you would expect to win.

$10 Pass line bets 0.42% each roll and $4.28 for every hour, which is $86 for every trip
$10 Place 6,8 bets 0.46% each roll, $4.69 for every hour, which is $94 for every trip
$10 Place 5,9 bets 1.11% each roll, $11.32 for every hour, which is $226 for every trip
$10 Place 4,10 bets 1.19% each roll, $12.14 for every hour, which is $243 for every trip
$1 Single Hardways 2.78% for every roll, $2.84 for every hour, which is $56.71 for every trip
$1 All hardways 2.78% for every roll , $11.34 for every hour, which is $227 for every trip
$5 All hardways 2.78% for every roll, $56.71 for every hour, which is $1134 for every trip
$1 Craps only on come out 3.29% for every roll, $3.35 for every hour, which is $67.09 for every trip
$1 Eleven only on come out 3.29% for every roll, $3.35 for every hour, which is $67.09 for every trip

Interestingly, the fact that the house percentages for the any craps/eleven and hardaways is not very good, they will not lose money as fast as the pass line bet will as long as there is some control over how often they are used. The best way to do this is to limit these bets to only the come out roll as shown in the chart.

The $1 “yo” bet, (11) known as the “two way yo” is a way that players like to tip the dealers without having to give too much on their trip. If the roll is an 11 then the pass line will win and the “Yo” bet, which is more substantial, will split.

You can see that other patterns used to bet can be expensive simply by using this metric. Look at what placing $10 on ever point number results in. A loss of $40.49 per hour and a total loss of $810 per trip.
