How Casinos Detect Card Counters
The pit bosses, also known as the people on the floor of the casino, as well as the surveillance personnel for the casino, are in charge of monitoring players and identifying card counters.
Computer analysis, surveillance, and simple observation are used to detect card counters. Once a player has been labeled as a card counter he/she will find it difficult to find a casino they can play at and win at regularly. As a result, those who are believed to be counting cards may find they have no way to continue winning money. Because of this professional card counters will need to do so under the radar and not draw so much attention to themselves that it is obvious they are counting cards. No matter how good you are at counting cards you will find yourself banned from casinos if you are targeted as a card counter.
Card counting within your own head is not illegal and many gamblers have sued casinos for banning them and/or not allowing them to play. There is no way for a casino to enforce any rule that a player cannot use his mind to make calculations.
Casinos are in business to make money and when it appears they will be unable to do so on certain players who may overtake the house edge then they take this very seriously. It is not uncommon to have a player be asked to leave the casino and no reason is necessary. Since it is private property the player must leave with no recourse.
Those players who are banned may try to slip into a casino in a disguise and continue to play. However, casinos have face recognition software that is claimed to be able to detect players who have been banned from playing even if they are wearing a disguise.
Casinos consider card counting to be a huge offense, even if it isn’t illegal. As a result, there are several different systems to detect card counters that are completely automated. One is using RFID signatures in casino chops to keep track of bet amounts automatically. Another is the MindPlay system that scans cards right after they have been shuffled. Another is the Shuffle Master Intelligent Shoe System. Player edge may be determined by using Protec 21 and Bloodhound.
One problem with the card reading technology is that it determines house edge, or player’s edge, on each shuffle. IN cases where the cards have player advantage they may be reshuffled. This ensures the house has the advantage every single time. This can create liability issues and some software systems have devised ways to avoid this from happening.
When a casino has all of this information at their fingertips they must evaluate play variation and accuracy as well as bet variation.
Bet Variation
When it comes to making money card counters know bet variation when they have the edge is their moneymaker. When the player has the edge it is time to increase the bet. After a few hands software can pinpoint a player who is counting cards because the hand and the bets will form a trend. However, players who do not count cards will have no trend in place.
Player Accuracy
It is typical for basic strategy errors to be made by regular players. Those who count cards must know when they are supposed to stand, hit, double down, or split. The software casinos use can help pinpoint how often errors are made by the player and what the house’s resulting edge is.
Play Variation
Basic strategy is used almost always, except when the count necessitates that some other method be used to take advantage of a bigger edge. If there is a pattern in the play then software will notice this.
