Different Blackjack Variations
With so many different variations in Blackjack it is obvious there would be different rules and regulations for each game. In fact, even the odds and strategies vary with each variation. If you are a pro at blackjack that doesn’t mean you will be a pro at all the variations. Because of this you should take your time and look over all of the variations and how they are played to ensure you are ready for any game in any country. Keep in mind there are over 100 different variations of Blackjack and not all rules are posted in every country, meaning you should also ask to make sure you know what is going on.
Dealer Soft 17
In dealer soft 17 there are two different strategies for the dealer. The dealer will hit on soft 17s in "H17" and stand on all 17s in the "S17" game. Regardless of which strategy is used the dealer must follow it. He has no choice in whether to hold or not as he must play by the rules. With H17 the player has a much lower advantage. The game used depends on the place and in Las Vegas there are just as many of one as another.
Number of decks
Players looking for the most favorable blackjack game should look for tables with the fewest decks. The fewer decks there are the more favorable the game will be for the player. Even without card counting, this is true for basic strategy players. Since everything is not equal, games with multiple decks usually have better rules than games with single decks.
Late Surrender
In Late Surrender the player may get half his bet back if he gives up. Some casinos advertise that surrender is available while others allow it but don’t post it. It always makes sense to ask. In the case of 16 versus 10 it is very favorable. It is only slightly favorable in the case of 16 versus ace, 16 versus 9, and 15 versus 10.
Resplit to nn
In the Resplit to nn variance the rule you should remember is “resplit infinite”. As long as the player receives the same value cards and can bet the additional amount he may continue to split as long as he wants. Many times, this rule is “resplit to four.” In general, these rules are basically the same and you won’t see four hands very often, much less more.
Resplit Aces
Even after splitting aces, even according to the rule above, the player will only get one card. There is an exception that the player can resplit if the second card happens to be an ace. This rule is favorable to the player.
Double after Split
When playing the double after split variance there is the option to double from a split to a two-card hand. In general, it is recommended for a player to play a split the same way as the first two cards. This rule changes depending on when the hands should be split.
Double on 10 or 11 only
Double on 10 or 11 is frequently called Reno rules. It is not uncommon to see many players annoyed by this because most players feel that doubling soft hands is just part of the way the game is played. .
European no-hole-card rule
With European no hole card rule the dealer has no hole card. In this instance if the dealer ends up with blackjack then the player will lose only his original bet. Any additional bets will be returned to him. This gives the same advantage as the regular game.
Altered payout for natural
This payout increases the house edge too much and more so than in other restrictions. The natural pays 1:1 or 6:5 in some places.
Dealer wins ties
This rarely used in regular blackjack, but when it is it works against the player because the dealer wins ties.
Five card Charlie/Five card trick
This rule states that the player wins after drawing five cards and not busting as long as there is not a blackjack on the table. |
