History

Many of the words in Vietnamese language are borrowed from Chinese language Cantonese. In early days Vietnamese was written using Chinese script. This was of course given a vernacular pronunciation. Also the French rule of Vietnam had a strong impact in term of modification of language. some French and Latin words are also integral part of Vietnamese language.

Vietnamese belongs to mon Khmer branch of Austro-Asiatic languages, Interestingly this language family is also linked with Khmer language spoken in Cambodia and Munda and khasi spoken in India as well as other tribal languages spoken in china. Vietnamese is very much influenced by Chinese and has lot of words reflecting the mix of Sino Vietnamese influence called ‘ hein vet’.

The written Vietnamese language was characterized by original Chinese character han tu and modified Vietnamese script called chu nom which was a modern version of ancient Chinese written characters.

Vietnamese dialects

Dialects are mainly divided into three parts; according to region where it’s spoken that is north dialect, south dialect and Central dialect. The differentiation is mainly based on sound system as well on difference in pronunciations and varied grammar, The north Central and Central dialects are similar to each other but are no intelligible with dialects of south and north regional dialects. In coastal regions language variation is almost neutralized which is not so in interiors and mountainous region of Vietnam.
