Portuguese language
Approximately 158 -175 million speak Portuguese at their native tongue. It ranks 5th, in the most spoken languages of the world almost 256 million speak it as native or second language. There is a strong people and media movement to make Portuguese an Official United Nation’s language
It has official status in the European Union (EU), Marcos (Mercosul in Portuguese), the African Union, the Organization of American States (OAS), the Latin Union, the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Portuguese Official Language (ACOLOP).
Impact of Colonization
Portuguese spread world wide in 15th and 16th Century Ad as effect of colonization of various parts of world by Portuguese rule. Brazil, Macau, Goa and Africa that included Brazil in Timor in South-East Asia and the five African countries that make up the PALOP lucophene, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé e Príncipe, Angola and Mozambique. For many years Sri Lanka had Portuguese as one of its main language Creoloe language which was a branch of Portuguese also was widely spoken in Asia, Africa and Caribbean islands.
Portuguese has two distinct version of speaking it one is European Portuguese and another is Brazilian Portuguese. Moreover the colonies which were occupied during 15th and 16 th centuries by Portuguese rule have imparted their own flavor to the language for e.g. Portuguese spoken in goa India is definitely different than Portuguese spoken in Macau or any other parts of the world.
Modern Portuguese
Spanish and Portuguese are intelligible due to similarity in their grammar, vocabulary and word structure. Although there are differences in phonetics and pronunciation. The language is regulated by different language organization. When aspect like Similarity of sound is considered than modern Portuguese is very similar sounding to French. Catalan, Spanish and even Italian. Spanish authors, Brazilian writers and Italian poets have described Portuguese as sweet, flowery, poetic and sonorous language from time to time.
Portuguese hold the prestigious ranks of being the fourth most learned language. And many academic institutions all over the world have introduced learning of Portuguese as second language or even foreign language. Compulsory in Uruguay, Argentina, Venezuela& other parts of South America and African nations too are thinking to adopt Portuguese as school and academic language.
