The single seat live blackjack version pits the player directly against the dealer rather than having to contend with what the other players may do when their turn arrives. This is advantageous to the player as it is likely that if they leave the next card for the dealer to draw rather than them; the dealer may likely bust a hand whereas when multiple players are seated; one may take a card that would change the outcome of the dealer’s hand. This allows a player to use the odds in their favor without having to consider the other player’s possible actions.

Once the player and dealer have received their cards, there are a variety of options the player may take before the dealer must make their move. The player may choose to stand or hit, depending on the total of their card values. In blackjack, the number cards retain their face value while the 10 card and all face retain the value of ten for the game. The Ace however, can be used at two values which are either one or ten. A “natural” or blackjack is when either the player or the dealer have an ace and a card valued at ten for their first two cards.

The player has the option of acting first once the cards have been dealt as the bet is placed before the deal. Occasionally, in the case of ten-valued cards, some casinos allow splitting only when the cards have the identical ranks; for instance, a hand of T-T may be split, but not of T-K. However, usually all ten-value cards are treated the same. Doubling and further splitting of post-split hands may be restricted, and blackjacks after a split are counted as non-blackjack 21 when comparing against the dealers hand. Hitting split aces is usually not allowed. Non-controlling players may follow the controlling player by putting down an additional bet, or decline to do so, instead associating their existing wager with one of the two post-split hands. In that case they must choose which hand to play behind before the second cards are drawn.
