Sports betting has been around as long as sports have been played in any organized capacity.  Sports are bet on in just about every country, both legally and illegally, allowing for people to place bets on their favorite teams as well as games that they just have a good feeling about.  Betting is done through Sportsbooks orBookmakers, as they are known, and they take bets on a wide variety of sports including baseball, basketball, football, tennis, hockey, snooker, and soccer.

The Basics of Sports Betting
The idea of sports betting is to beat the oddsmakers and to win money as a result.  Many people bet on the games not only to have the chance to make money, but to make the games that they feel passionate about even more exciting.  In fact, a lot of people learn to like sports that they never liked before through sports betting.

To place a sports bet you will need to locate a sportsbook, you can locate them either physically or online.  Many sportsbooks will also take bets over the phone.  You need to make sure that you are clear about the people that are involved with sports betting, the oddsmaker being the one that actually makes the odds and the sportsbook being the one that actually takes the bets.

When you contact a sportsbook you need to let them know what you are betting on, the type of bet, and the amount that you are betting.  There are many different types of bets to place on a sporting event, so you should understand them before you take your wager to the sportsbook.

Straight bet or Single: This is the simplest bet.  You bet on a winner at specific odds.

Point Spread: This type of bet allows for you to bet on a winner from two selections that have been made equal by allocating points to the team that is thought to be the loser going into the game.  The favorite has to win by more than the point spread for you to win; otherwise you lose the wager even if your team wins.

Buy Points: This is the process of buying points to move the spread.
The Moneyline: This is a type of bet that establishes the odds for each team but opposite to what would have been a point spread.

Total: A bet on the number of points scored in the game by both teams, including points that are scored in overtime.

Over/Under: This is a bet that combines the number of points scored by the two teams in the game, over or under the total that the oddsmakers predicted.

Parlay: This is a multiple bet.  You can make many different selection o two or more games with the intent of pressing the winnings of the first win on the bet of the following game.  A parlay can be risky but can also net big winnings if played right.

Teaser: A teaser bet is much like a parlay but you have the option to add or subtract points from a point spread.

If-wager: This is a type of bet that allows for the bettor to make a second wager depending on a win on a first bet selection.

Open Wager: This type of bet allows for a better to play teasers or parlays, making a selection at different times and different days.

Future: This is the type of bet that allows for the better to place bets on a future event, such as who the champion will be at the end of a season that is just starting.

Exotic Bets: These are bets placed on unusual events.

Proposition Bet: This is an offer of bets at odds and conditions that are chosen by the sportsbook, and usually only applies to exotic bets.

As you can see, there really are a lot of sports betting options to choose from.  Not all sportsbooks will offer all of these betting varieties, which is why it is a good thing to learn about all of them so that you can place a bet that you are comfortable with.
