    When You Play Poker

    When the cards are dealt by the dealer the betting will start! Players bet into the pot in the middle of the table and the bets are placed clockwise.  The player that has the highest rank hand showing is the first to speak as well as to bet and he or she can choose to either bet or check.  By saying check the player passes the decision to bet to the next player who can check, if all of the players check than it is the end of the poker round. At this time everyone will open up their hands and the player with the highest hand will win.

    After one player places a bet the whole game picks up pace and excitement.  Each player can choose to call, raise, or fold.  To fold is to drop out of the round and not play anymore.  When you call it means you are willing to match the bet, and to raise means to match the bet and add an extra bet.  When there are no more raises this is the time when everyone will open up their cards and the highest hand wins the pot.

    How to Play Poker

    If you get out at all, or even if you don’t, you know that poker is very popular right now.  People of all ages are enjoying a wide variety of different poker games and it’s about time that you learned, too!  You’ll be glad to know that with just a bit of practice you can learn to play poker, too!  While poker has many different variants, it is the most played game in the world and all of them are games that are played against the dealer.  Poker is a game that is more psychological than anything else, which is why many people say that it takes just a few minutes to learn but a lifetime to master!

    The Basics of Poker

Poker is played with a standard deck of cards, which contains 52 cards, though there are some variants that use more than one deck, those that add Jokers, and those that add Wild Cards.  In the game, all of the cards are ranked in descending order starting with the highest card, the Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Ace.  As you can see, an Ace can either be a high or low card.  In addition to the cards there are four different suits which are the spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs, though no one suit is ranked higher than the other.

    To get the game started each player is dealt five cards, which is referred to as their hand.  The player that has the highest ranking hand wins the game.  There are some basic types of hands that you can put together, but when you are dealing with all of the cards in a deck there are more than two million different possible combinations in a hand.  How the different poker hands rank is Below:

    • Five of a Kind is possible when you are playing with wild cards and is the most valuable hand.
    • Royal Flush
    • Straight Flush is five cards that are in sequence as well as the same suit.  This is considered the highest ranking natural hand.
    • Four of a kind which is a hand that contains four cards of the same rank.
    • Full House is a hand that contains both a three of a kind and a pair.
    • Flush is a hand that has cards that are all of the same suit in any order.
    • Straight is a hand that has five cards of any suit in sequence
    • Three of a kind is a hand where two cards are a pair and one that is of the same rank.
    • Two pair is a hand that has two pairs.
    • Pair is a hand that contains just one pair.
