Understanding the Value of Cards in Blackjack

Have you been avoiding the game of Blackjack because you assume that figuring out the card values is too difficult?  If so, you’ll want to think again as the card values are very easy to learn and memorize.  Once you get them down the card values will stick with you indefinitely.  Many people start playing Blackjack and then when they are comfortable with it they branch out to other casino games.  The great thing about this game is that if you can count to 21 and do basic math you are already half way there!

The first thing you should know when you play the game of Blackjack is that the ace card can have two different values. These are one or eleven and you can use the ace in whatever way is most favorable to your specific hand.  The cards two through nine are the value that is seen on the face of the card. So if you are dealt a two it is worth two.  You should also know that the 10, King, Queen, and Jack are all valued at 10.  So, if you were dealt an ace, king, and queen you would have 21 or blackjack based on the fact that the king and queen are both worth 10 and the ace is worth one or eleven, whichever is most beneficial.

THE VALUE OF THE ACE

The Ace has two values that you chose. It can be either valued at a 1 or 11.

= 11 or 1

= 11 OR 21

If you are curious about how suits are treated in the game of Blackjack you can stop wondering.  You can stop wondering because suits do not come into play in the game of blackjack. So, if you have the same king, queen, and ace and they are all of different suits or if they are all different it doesn’t matter, you still have 21.  Not having to worry about suits is something that appeals to many people. In fact, the straightforward game play and limited details is what draws many people to the game.
