In any game, how you bet is the ultimate determiner of whether you win or you lose. The same goes for live dealer roulette. With luck holding the dice, or rather, the ball, trying to win a roulette game can be pretty tricky. And that’s why it’s important to know the different kinds of bets you can make. This will help you weigh your options and place the best bets – those that get you a higher payout rate.

When you play live roulette, you must remember that there are no rigid rules governing this game.  The only thing you need to know when playing live roulette is what bets you should make and how to make them.

There are two basic bets that are open to you when you play live roulette: the inside bets and the outside bets.  An inside bet is a wager on the particular number where the ball might land on the roulette wheel.  Multiple wagers are allowed for the inside bet.

An outside bet, on the other hand, is a wager on the position of the ball, not on the number it will land on.  All outside bets are even and only one can be made for every spin of the wheel.

While we have two basic bets on live roulette, under those two classifications are many other types.  The more wagers that you make on one spin of the roulette wheel, the lower the odds go for you and the possible winnings get higher.

The inside bets that you can make on a game of live dealer roulette are:

  • Straight up.  A straight up bet is a wager on any specific number on the wheel, from one to 36, as well as both 0 or 00 (or just 0 for the European roulette).
  • Split.  To make a split bet is to wager on two different numbers that are placed beside each other on the table.
  • Street.  A street bet means to make a wager on three different numbers located on the same row on the table.
  • Double street.  A double street bet is a wager on six numbers placed in two rows adjacent to each other.
  • Corner bet.  A bet made on four numbers placed in adjacent positions on the table is called a corner bet.
  • Five number.  A five-number bet is a wager that the ball will land on either the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 or 3.

The following wagers are considered outside bets in live roulette dealer games:

  • Red or black.  The numbers on both the roulette wheel and the table have either a red background or a black background.  These numbers are evenly divided amongst these two colors.  To make a red or black bet is to wager that the ball will land on a number with a red background or a black background, whichever is your choice.
  • Odd or even.   In making an odd or even bet, you get to predict if the ball will land on an even number or an odd number and wager on your choice.
  • 1 through 18, or 19 through 36.  To make this type of outside bet, you will have to make a wager on whether the ball will end up on any of the first 18 or the last 18 numbers on the wheel, whichever it is that you pick.
  • Dozens.  Betting on dozens is wagering on whether the ball will end up on the first 12 numbers of the wheel, the middle 12 or the last 12.
  • Columns.  To make a column bet is to predict and wager that the ball will land on any number in a particular column on the table.

In live dealer roulette, there are several ways to bet. Each different type of bet is equivalent to a different payout rate. You can also bet as much as you can. But it is not all about dragging the chips to anywhere you feel like. It is not about betting on a single slot among the 37 or 38 available slots. Betting on a single slot, or a single number and color combination also called a straight bet or a straight up bet, is just the tip of the iceberg. There are several other bets you can make, but first, you have to know the basic layout of the roulette table.

The betting layout contains 37 or 38 slots, in random black and white, each containing a number. To the side of the rows and columns of numbers, and below it, there are lines representing other values as well.

The first category is where you place your bet. If you bet on any slot among the 37 or 38 ones, you place an inside bet. However, if you bet on the slots to the right or below the basic betting rows and columns, you place an outside bet. That’s not all. Your bets can also come in different numbers of slots. As previously mentioned, a straight bet is a bet on a single number. A straight bet, also known as the classic bet, is probably the simplest, but the hardest to win and the most wanted bet in a roulette game. This is because since you are betting on just one particular slot, you are betting that that slot will represent the exact outcome of the game. That’s too much to bet on just one slot, though, but the 35:1 payout makes this a very popular bet among roulette players.

Aside from the outright straight bet, you can also place other, much safer bets such as the split bet. The split bet is when you bet on two numbers that lie adjacent to each other. The payout is 17 to 1. You can place a split bet by placing your chip between the two numbers. You can also add another number to a split bet, making it a street bet, which refers to a bet placed on three adjacent numbers. The payout is usually at 11 to 1. You can also place bets on four numbers lying together in a corner. This is called a corner or a square bet. The payout is usually 8 to 1. You can also bet on five numbers together. The five-number bet, however, refers only to a bet on the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3, for American roulette. This is only available for the American table, and pays out at 6 to 1. You can also bet on a dozen of numbers, such as the first 12, the second 12, and the third 12, since there are 36 slots in all.

Aside from those bets, there are also two other categories of betting. One is the color, and the other is the value. Based on the color, you can either place a bet on all the numbers in a red-colored slot, or all the numbers in black. Based on the value, you can bet on all even numbers, or all odd numbers. That is to say, you are betting that the ball will land on any red, black, odd-, or even-numbered slot, whichever you place your bet on. You can also place high and low bets, referring to numbers 19 to 36, and 1 to 18, respectively.

With all these different types of bets in mind, you will now understand why live roulette is a more complicated game than you might think. And you will also begin to comprehend the reason why the game is quite popular.

European live roulette is different than the American variation. The most important difference is the increased odds for European roulette. European roulette has only one green "0". This means that there are 37 possible outcomes with a payout of 1:35. The American variation has two green spaces "0" and "00". This means that in American version of roulette there are 38 possible outcomes with the same payout of 1:35. This could mean a big difference in the overall success !
