If you are new to the game of Blackjack you will not only need to know the point of the game and how to put together a good hand of cards, you will also want to know how the cards and dealt.  As with any casino game, Blackjack has very specific rules and these rules also apply to how the cards are dealt.  Luckily, the process of dealing is quite simple and once you play a couple times you will know exactly what to expect each and every time the cards are dealt.  There are some variations on how cards are dealt depending on where you play and what variant of the game that you are playing, but usually the dealing of the cards is quite similar.

What will Happen?

When all players are seated at the table the dealer will begin to deal cards to everyone.  In the game of Blackjack the dealer makes two passes around the table, so that everyone ends up with two cards in his or her hand when the initial dealing ends.  The dealer will start at his or her left and when everyone has two cards the dealer will turn over the second of his or her cards and show the table the value of the card.

If you are playing a Blackjack game that is being dealt from a shoe all of the cards will be dealt face up so you won’t have to worry about turning them over.  If you are not playing from a shoe you will be allowed to touch the cards and turn them over.  Remember when you play Blackjack that you are only allowed to touch the cards with one hand and you may only touch the first two cards, any subsequent cards will be left face up on the table.  If you have been playing poker for a long time you may have difficulty breaking the habit of holding the cards with two hands, but practice will make perfect!

When each player has his or her two cards the dealer will begin to move around the table again, from left to right, and each player needs to indicate whether they would like to “hit” or take another card or “hold” and simply keep the cards that they presently have.  After each of the players have made their decision the dealer will complete his or her hand and then work around the table again to collect the debts of players and pay out winnings.

As you can see, the dealing style just keeps repeating itself, meaning that the dealer always starts at the left, or first base, and deals around the table so everyone ends up with two cards.  Then the dealer makes another pass around the table giving players the opportunity to hit or hold, and then a final pass to collect debts or payout winnings.  Once you go through it a couple times you’ll have it down and know what to expect each and every time.
