If you pursue the Early type of surrender, you may choose to surrender prior to when the dealer flips his cards to see if he dealt himself a blackjack or natural hand. If you pursue the Late type of surrender, you are only permitted to surrender once the dealer has checked for a blackjack or natural hand and doesn’t have it. Choosing either type of surrender means forfeiting 50% of your original bet anyway for that hand to the casino.

Most of the time, Late surrender is the surrender option allowed by the house and chosen by many players. You need to figure out whether the odds seem to be in your favor (which basically means guessing – unless you happen to be a card counter savant, in which case you are in danger of being shown the door by the casino. Card counting geniuses are often discriminated against by casinos because they have an advantage over the house and the other players with their natural ability.) If it seems the odds are not good, then an Early surrender (when permitted by the casino) seems to be prudent, though still costly for you. But this is gambling and losses are to be expected at some point.

The next two options you have are related to one another – they are called “hitting” or “standing”. How you do these two options depends on the type of blackjack game you are playing. In a shoe game, where the cards are dealt face up to you on the table, you can ask for another “hit” (meaning another card) by tapping with one finger behind your face-up cards on the table. The reason for this is that surveillance cameras can catch hand signals better than an announcement of “hit” or “stand”. You can “stand” or simply halt at the current total you have by waving your hand horizontally over the cards you already have. In a face-down type of blackjack where you will be holding your first two cards in one hand, you can take another “hit” by scraping your current cards over the felt surface of the table once. However, you cannot pick up any other cards dealt to you – these have to remain face-up on the table. If you bust by getting a total over 21, you have to place your first two cards face-up on the table. If you opt to “stand”, you should then insert the corners of your two cards beneath the chips of your bet. You are never permitted to pick up the chips themselves.
